NZTrio thrives on pushing the boundaries of classical music. Their exhilarating interpretations of the masterworks, committed performances of fascinating new pieces and genre-crossing collaborations continue to impress audiences around NZ and the world. This event will be the first classical Black Barn has held outside of the amphitheatre and proves to be as enthralling in the Underground Cellar with up-lit trees and braziers surrounding the venue. Violinist Justine Cormack, cellist Ashley Brown and pianist Sarah Watkins first joined forces in 2002 and were Ensemble in Residence at The University of Auckland from 2004-2009. From the outset, their artistry, intensity, and approachability has captivated music lovers throughout New Zealand, Brazil, the US and UK, China, Korea and Indonesia. Recent highlights include appearances at the 2009 Shanghai Spring Festival, the 2008 Beijing Modern Music Festival and performances of both the Beethoven Triple Concerto and Gareth Farr’s Triple Concerto with the Vector Wellington, Christchurch Symphony and Auckland Philharmonia Orchestras. Haydn's lively Gypsy Rondo kicks off this Underground Cellar performance in vigorous style, starkly contrasting with what follows with the mystical mood of Indonesian born Wayan Yudane's Entering the Stream. Jennifer Higdon's Piano Trio presents her musical interpretation of Pale Yellow and Fiery Red, resulting in a luxurious first movement and a brilliantly explosive second movement. After a short break, the trio will lull you back with three sensuous tangos from the legendary Bandoneon player, Astor Piazzolla. The slow movement of Schumann's Trio No.3 then continues the romantic mood, before NZTrio launches into the whirling tarantismo that is John Psathas' thrilling Helix.
